1. Welcome to the September 2006 edition of Talking-To-Animals Newsletter!

Dear readers,

With September fast approaching, I am looking forward to cooler weather! Southern California, like many
parts of the U.S. is experiencing the "Summer that won't end!" In spite of the torpid weather that many of
us have endured, animal owners are a determined lot and still find time to get ourselves and our animals
out for exercise and socialization.

I was taking one of my three dogs out for their daily walk around our local lake which is the social hub
of our community before it got too hot (remember if you are uncomfortable, your pet is too.).  While I was
walking and talking with others, I was struck with how much more there was to just merely "walking the dog".

The first person I saw was a lonely, older woman who had lost her husband several years ago. She has a
16 year old Doxie, severely crippled by arthritis AND a one year old Bichon who is full of mischief and life.
Some of the regular walkers are quite critical of her for getting such a mismatched pup with her old, infirm
dog. But over the months, I have come to see how truly beautiful they are together. This lovely woman knows
every dog and walker that she sees during her twice a day outing with her dogs. These walks are her lifeline
to the outside world. During these walks I'll see the older dog walking very slowly, with difficulty, while the pup races
to the end of his long leash, then come back and wait. I feel the pup is really the "guide dog" for the older one.
The three of them are such a pleasure to watch; so much love and caring shown to each other and to the daily
walkers who know them.
On weekend days I'll see "Biker Bird", a Yellow Napped Amazon Parrot who is in a plexiglass box and rides
on the handlebars of his owners bike. He is quite the local legend and seems to obviously enjoy his rides and
the attention he draws, as does his owner!

Then there is Rodney, a medium size terrier of uncertain ancestory whose owner got him out of the local animal
shelter. He had not been physically abused, just terribly neglected and very underweight and unsure of himself.
Now Rodney is in beautiful condition, thanks to the love and attention he has received in big doses from his owner.
Rodney's owner had recently retired and needed a "project" and that turned out to be Rodney. Before he had Rodney,
he was not a particularily outgoing person. Since Rodney is in his life, he is one of the "lake regulars," even
bringing dog biscuits for the other dogs! He is so proud of "his boy' and his new walking partner. I just have to
smile when I see them coming down the sidewalk. I don't know who is happier, the owner or Rodney!

The love and magic that I see every day is remarkable and makes my heart very happy. It validates what I know to be
so very true of the animals our lives. I too, am a part of the lake dog walkers and no matter what else happens that
day, my day has gotten a wonderful jump-start.

Animals give many people a reason to socialize, someone to love who will love them back, unconditionally and many
times fill the lonliness that is in their hearts. Some of my clients credit their pets for giving them a reason to live
after major health challenges. Having pets gave them the will to live, to care about someone other than themselves,
someone whose very life depended on their care.

Our animals know us better than just about anyone else, sharing our lives day in and day out. They are solid, grounded
beings that help us remember that we are all a part of something bigger and more spiritual than ourselves and our
everyday lives that we will never completely understand. I always feel honored to share my life with my own animals,
to be outside in nature with them and know that all of us walking with our animals and socializing with each other are
enjoying a ritual as old as time itself and also more necessary than ever in today's world. It brings a peace and a
connection to all of life and the feeling that for that moment in time, all is well in the world.

In A STORY FROM MY FILES you'll read about Scout, the rescue dog and the change that he and his older
"brother" Sunny have brought to his owner, Lisa Dougherty's life.  Lisa is also an advertiser in our newsletter
and I highly recommend her Whole Body Fitness services to those of you who live in the Southern California area.

I know you will enjoy this month's story in PET'S DO THE DARNDEST THINGS! - The story of Hope, Tess' new sister.
Most of you will remember the story of Tess from an earlier newsletter (and if you are new to Talking-To-Animals, you can read about Tess in our
newsletter archive on my website, www.talk-to-animals.com/newsletter.htm)

There are other treats for you to read this month so enjoy.

May you and your pets have a happy and healthy month,

Charlene

3.  PET IDENTIFICATION ALERT!
I try to have articles in my newsletter that are informative,  educational or bring a smile to your
heart. I think we all hear enough discouraging and scarey news on the major networks and
newspapers these days. However, this came to me from a very reliable source, Dr Jean Hofve
and Jackson Galaxy, a cat behaviorist, from their newsletter, CatsWalk.Although they talk about
cats, the information is the same for dogs as well.

Cat Identification and Microchips: What You Need To Know

All cats need to carry their own ID at all times! Even indoor cats can sneak out or find themselves
outside for other reasons. Casts should ONLY wear safety collars, either elastic or breakaway .
What are good collars for dogs, don't work for cats since they can get caught on nails, fences
or branches and hang to death. Beastie Bands, are made of neoprene (like scuba suits) so they
are very stretchy and come in colors and patterns.

Not all cats can or will wear a collar. A more reliable method of identification for cats is microchipping.
Cats that have been missing for months, even years, have been returned home, thanks to a microchip.
There are three major microchip companies: AVID, Home Again, and Banfield(the PetSmart vet clinic
folks). When microchips first came out, AVID and Home Again distributed thousands of scanners,
at no cost, to shelters all over the U.S. The chips use similar frequencies and can be read by the
universal scanner most vets and shelters have on hand.

Around 2004, after its supplier lost a patent infingement lawsuit, Banfield developed its own microchip
according to ISO(International Standards Organization) specifications, which are widely used in Europe.
Banfield's reasoning is that ISO standards will eventually be put into place in the U.S.; but the truth is
that this is years in the future, if ever. Because they use a different frequency, BANFIELD MICROCHIPS
CANNOT BE DETECTED BY MOST SCANNERS IN THE U.S.! There have been cases were pets were
lost and ended up in a shelter. The shelter scanned for the chip but DID NOT FIND the Banfield chip; the
animals were subsequently euthanized. If your dog or cat was microchipped at Banfield after 2004, it is
NOT fully protected and you may want to consider having an AVID Home Again chip added.
-------------
FYI: pets that are imported from foreign countries are sometimes required to be microchipped before
being shipped to another country. Again, our scanners do not always pick up foreign microchips.
I do know this from personal experience.

4. FEATURED STORY: Scout The Rescue Dog

My name is Lisa Dougherty and the owner of two rescue dogs. I rescued my 1st dog, Sunny over 6 years ago
when I started up my business as a personal trainer and consultant in Newport Beach, CA.  I contacted
Charlene to help me understand his past and get advice on raising him from that point forward.  Sunny has become
such a big part of my life!  All my clients know him and you will find him sitting on the porch of the gym that
I train out of.

A couple of months ago I felt drawn to rescue another dog, not because Sunny needed a friend, but I felt compelled
save a life.  I went to a local shelter nearby to start my search.  I was appalled at the conditions the animals were in
and  I immediately asked if I could volunteer there to walk or run the dogs. I'm a personal trainer what a fun thing
for me to do and I knew the dogs would greatly benefit from the exercise.  Surprisingly they declined my assistance.
However, I did find a wonderful dog who is now known as "Scout" they I rescued from that shelter.  I think rescue is a
good word.  I found out that he originally was rescued by two women who are pet store owners who travel to other
shelters and save dogs that are about to be destroyed that day, transferring them to other Humane shelters for
adoption.  Scout was one of a group of 7 dogs that had been 'saved' in that manner that day.  I am so glad that
those women do what they do. Scout is an awesome dog whose life was saved because of them.

Having Scout in my life now and learning about the shelter system caused me to develop a "Dog Lover's" page on
my website www.WholeBodyFitness.Biz to create more awareness and to share wonderful dog services and
products that I have come across.  I contacted Charlene again to see what she could tell me about Scout's past and
how I could integrate him into my family now.  Charlene was very caring and immediately went to work.  She has now
helped me twice over the years and I'm proud to share her services on my website and to my friends, family and clients.
I also would like to invite any of her friends, clients and family to contact me if I may help them in the area of health, fitness, nutrition for greater longevity.

PETS DO THE DARNDEST THINGS!

Many of you readers remember Sharon I. and her adorable dog family. Sharon sent this to me
about Hope, their newest addition:

Sharon's husband found Hope as a stray and she was in deplorable condition. With the love and
care from Sharon and her husband, Hope began a new chapter in her life. Sharon, like many of
us, took her brood to the groomers. When Sharon picked them up, all were sporting scarves!
All but one of the dogs, Tess, clearly enjoyed the scarves.

After coming home late from work one night, Sharon noticed that the remote and the scarf belonging
to Tess was lying on the floor. Sharon was too tired to pick up either the remote or the scarf and went
directly to bed. The next morning, much to Sharon's amazement, Hope was wearing Tess' scarf! When
Sharon asked her husband if he had switched scarves, he told her "no."

The only thing they could figure out was that sometime during the night, Hope had jumped off the bed,
spied the scarf on the floor and somehow had slipped her head through the hole, all by herself!  She seemed
quite pleased with herself the following morning. She had a cocky, yet prissy little walk about her. As Sharon says,
"God love her little heart; she likes to wear scarves!" She feels pretty. Sharon swapped it out for a pink
one that was a better fit, but she is still wearing it. Sharon concludes by saying, "that baby wanted her
scarf on.  And that really touched me so much."

Many of the dogs I work with, both male and female, really understand the significance of wearing a
scarf or a bow after going to the groomer. Like us, they like to feel pretty and special!

6.  Feline Haiku

The food in my bowl
Is old, and more to the point
Contains no tuna.

So you want to play.
Will I claw at dancing string?
Your ankle's closer.

There's no dignity
In being sick - which is why
I don't tell you where.

Seeking solitude
I am locked
in the closet.
For once I need you.

Tiny can, dumped in
Plastic bowl. Presentation,
One star; service: none.

Am I in your way?
You seem to have it backwards:
This pillow's taken.

Your mouth is moving;
Up and down, emitting noise.
I've lost interest.

The dog wags his tail,
Seeking approval. See mine?
Different message.

My brain: walnut-sized.
Yours: largest among primates.
Yet, who leaves for work?

Most problems can be
Ignored. The more difficult
Ones can be slept through.

My affection is
conditional. Don't stand up,
It's your lap I love.

Cats can't steal the breath
Of children. But if my tail's
Pulled again, I'll learn.

I don't mind being
Teased, any more than you mind
A skin graft or two.

So you call this thing
Your "cat carrier." I call
These my "blades of death."

Toy mice, dancing yarn
Meowing sounds. I'm convinced:
You're an idiot.

6. FROM THE BOOKSHELF

As many of you long time readers and clients know, I am a big fan of Whole Dog Journal for their unbiased
evaluation of foods,  nutitrional supplements, toys, training techniques and other dog-related items of interest.
I often wished that their was a similar publication for cat owners, but up until now I could not find any that
I could recommend. Well, that problem has been solved!

Quite by accident, I came across a magazine by the Tufts School of Veterinary Medicine called
Catnip-The Magazine For Caring Cat Owners. I am just very impressed by it, not only because it comes
from a highly regarded school of veterinary medicine such as Tufts, but because like Whole Dog Journal,
it does not accept advertising. It has articles on diet, nutrition, health guidance, plus product safety and value.
There is a monthly column, "Dear Doctor," and a list of resources every month. Sample topics from past
issues inclue: Hospice Care For Cats, Diagnosis: Kidney Disease, Medicine-Giving Helpers, Yikes! A Car Ride!,
Automatic Waterers and Rescuing Purebreds.  This is a magazine that you will want to keep in your library
for reference. I can't wait for my first issue to arrive!

8.  THE TAIL END

As I write the September newsletter, I am reminded that just one year ago, today, Hurricane Katrina hit our
Gulf States, changing the area forever. Animals, as well as people from that area are still dealing with the
aftermath of the devastation. Hurricane Katrina displaced more people and animals than any other natural
disaster in the history of the U.S. As we are all painfully aware, some people will never return to their former
homes and have been relocated to other areas of the U.S. Many of the amimals that survived the Hurricane,
sadly, were not able to be reunited with their families as the families had no permanent homes. Some were
taken and fostered thousands of miles away, ultimately to be placed into new homes and families.

I do believe that in every cloud there is a silver lining and such is the case with the consequences of Hurricane
Katrina. There is a new federal law, Pets Evacuation And Transportation Standards(PETS) Acts, passed by both
houses of Congress, thanks to the e-mails, calls and letters drom hundreds of thousands of people like you who
deeply care about pets. Once enacted. the law will ensure that no pet is ever left behind again when disaster
strikes. Seven states have also passed laws protecting animals in times of disaster.

You can show your continued support of the Humane Society Of the United States and other animal welfare
groups disaster relief programs every time you mail a letter by purchasing the popular HSUS Disaster Relief
39 cent stamp from www.zazzle.com.

The HSUS began mobilizing their Disaster Services to respond to Hurricane Ernesto as have other humane
organizations if needed. Their rescue vehicles are driving south to a staging area as you read this. Our thoughts,
prayers and good wishes are with all the people and their pets in the Gulf States at this time.

May you have a healthy and safe September with your wonderful pets and loved ones,

Charlene
