1. Welcome to the August 2006 edition of Talking-To-Animals Newsletter!

Dear readers,

This has been a Summer to remember weather-wise across the entire country. There are many theories on why we are having such an unusually hot Summer ranging from global warming to warm ocean currents, but theories or not, we are all having a really warm Summer! This weather not only affects us, but really impacts the health and well-being of our companion animals. I am always saddened to hear from clients who have neighbors that either have dogs chained up outside or leave them in yards with no shade or water. Remember if you are hot and uncomfortable outside, your pet is too! This is especially true for young animals, older, sick or debilitated animals. Recently a client in the St. Louis area told me of a situation where his neighbors left one dog chained outside all the time and then got another dog to live outside too!  He talked to the neighbor and told him (in a non-confrontational manner) that his dogs really needed more protection from the elements. Not only did he help the dogs in question, but he got to know his neighbor a little better in the process. When I last spoke to him, the dogs had been kept inside during this extreme heatwave.

We are all stewards for the animals and we can each do our part to educate and inform people of better ways to care for animals that are entrusted to us.

On a lighter note, please read the story of the rogue monkeys in Kenya, Africa that literally turned a woman's life upside down!

FROM THE BOOKSHELF is a review of an "oldie but goodie" book on natural care for dogs and cats. Well worth the read.

A STORY FROM MY FILES tells the wonderful help a senior cat, Stannie, received from Flower Essences to support him in his senior years. I will be writing more about Flower Essences in upcoming newsletters and their role in the emotional and spiritual health of our pets.

In the "dog days of Summer," when we are all feeling somewhat lazy and reflective, please take some time to spend alone with your pet and enjoy the quiet communion you share. Just being in each other's presence is communication of the deepest kind between souls.

May you and your pets have a happy and healthy month,

Charlene

3.  TIPS TO USE WHEN BOARDING YOUR PET

Recently I became aware of a tragic situation that with a little forethought and planning could have been avoided. A family entrusted the care of their elderly, sickly cat to a neighbor while they were out of town for a week. Unfortunately, the neighbor had a family emergency and left the cat without anyone to come in and  care for it. When the owners came home 5 days later, the cat was dehydrated and near death. In spite of care at a 24 hour emergency facility, the cat died.

  1. If you leave your pet at home in your absence, make certain that the person is reliable and trustworthy and has a basic understanding of your pet.
  2. Have a backup plan with two other people you trust in case the caretaker becomes ill or is unable to care for your pet.
  3. Let your vet know that someone else is caring for your pet and you will assume financial responsibility in case the pet needs to be seen.
  4. If you have a pet who is on medication, a special diet, is elderly or who has special needs, you would probably have more peace of mind if you boarded your pet at your veterinarian's or at a facility that he recommends.
  5. Children in my opinion, do not make good pet sitters. The only exception is if an adult accompanies your child when they make visits to feed, water and care for a pet.

4. FEATURED STORY:  MONKEY TROUBLES!

I receive many emails and requests throughout the month.  Some of my mail is decidedly entertaining
to read, although I am certain the person writing it is earnest and does not see the humor in the problem
they write about.   I thought I would share a recent email that was sent to my by a very caring lady,
Mrs. C W, who lives in Kenya, East Africa, and was at her wits end with her animal problems.

I've edited the email slightly (although you can probably figure out what was written).  After reading her
email, you might understand the first thought that popped into my head "I can't imagine living with monkeys!"

Mrs. CW writes:

"Dear Charlene,

I found your name on the Web under Animal Comunicators. I live in a forest on the coast of
Kenya, East Africa in an open house like a hut.  In the middle of the house we have planted
a dead tree with spreading branches on which we hang our lights and hats.  At first I also tied
on orchids to  grow on the branches..

My big problem is the Monkey troops who live in the forest like to use my house as their
principal amusement park.  After some bad years, I  finally netted in two bedrooms and the
kitchen.

This became an instant challenge to the junior  monkeys.  They went around the outside of my
bedrooms checking for a way in.  Even if there is the tiniest possibility (under the door) they will
try it and sometimes they succeed.  There is no food in the bedrooms so their objective in getting
in is to behave like delinquents.  Its the young monkeys who do this and its like a dare.  Once in,
they fly about trashing everything.  They always over-turn chairs throughout the whole house, break
as many oraments as possible, smash glass and china if possible, upturn vases of flowers and
shred plants.  When they have finished trashing, they sh*t everywhere then go.

My bed is a netted 4 poster because we have a lot of mosquitos and their favorite thing is to use the
roof net as a trampoline then to roll around on the bed itself pretending to be humans.  Before they
leave they sh*t all over the bed which has white lace covers. I can't even have a garden because
they eat every flower that appears, pick and shred pretty coloured leaves and knock down or
devastate shrubs.

They take little notice of me threatening them or shouting at them.  The only thing that has any
effect is a super soaker water pistol.  I have only to pick this up and they start moving off.  But it's
hard work, tiring and depressing.  I have allowed them to drink out of my foot bath because the
drought has been very bad.  Short of actually shooting one,  I dont know how to control the situation.
Then I thought of writing to an animal communicator and asking if there is any way I could order them
off.  They already know that they are not wanted and, like teenage delinquents, this seems to be the
main reason they want to come. They deliberately vandalise.  Perhaps the troop leaders could be
told to keep them out to avoid geting them shot.

I should be so grateful if you could come up with any ideas or solution to this problem

With many thanks,
Mrs. C W
Watamu, Kenya"

5. A STORY FROM MY FILES - STANNIE THE CAT

Dear Readers,

Recently I completed ad advanced course in Flower Essences.  I have used flower essences in my
as part of a complete and personalized program I recommend for pets when I feel that these would
benefit the animal.  As I mentioned earlier, I will be writing more about Flower Essences in upcoming
newsletters.

Nancy F contacted me about her cat, Stanley, who was experiencing some of the problems age can
bring to a beloved pet.

Here is Nancy's story:

"Finding Charlene Boyd was a beautiful gift for my 17-year old cat, Stanley, & myself.  The communication
she had with Stannie has helped me to better understand him, to find out about more of his needs, & to
give me the knowledge of what would make this cat that I love so dearly be more comfortable through
his senior years.

Before talking with Charlene, I wasn't aware that flower essences were used on animals to help balance
their emotions.  Charlene's suggestion of using pink yarrow has helped both Stannie & myself to be
much more at ease with our heightened sensitivity.

For a long time, whenever I would become emotionally upset, Stannie would "feel" my emotions, & much
to my dismay, he would vomit, somehow trying to release some of my emotional upset that he had
"taken on"  himself.  Charlene was so very helpful with this issue, communicating to Stannie
that I thanked him greatly for his wanting to try to help "heal" me, but that I was okay to care for myself,
thus freeing him from this responsibility.  After Charlene communicated this with Stannie, he has
not vomited again, & for this I am so very thankful!  The flower essence, pink yarrow, has been helpful
with this problem, as well, & now that I am also using yarrow, it is helping me, one who feels other
people's feelings empathically, to be protected from taking on other's emotions.

After Charlene received the information from Stannie that his hips hurt, I was able to find a holistic
vet with her help, & Stannie was able to have acupuncture for his arthritis.  Through this very kind &
gentle vet, I found a dental hygienist who will clean Stannie's teeth without his having to be put under
anesthesia, which was a big concern for me at his advanced age.  With the addition of liquid vitamins to
his diet, Stannie's energy has been increased, & by adding a bit of cod liver oil each day, it has helped
greatly with constipation.  So, many positive results have come about since I found Charlene.

Charlene's communication with Stannie has given me much peace of mind.  I know now more clearly
how my dear companion cat feels, physically & emotionally, what brings him serenity, & what
changes I needed to make in his diet & in his daily life to bring him more physical comfort.

I'm very glad I listened to my intuition when it told me that it would be a very positive experience to have
Charlene communicate with Stannie.  She has a wonderful gift, & I'm so very thankful that she was able
to answer my questions, bring about a better quality of life  for my cat, & to help both Stannie &
myself be more at peace with ourselves & with each other.

 Nancy F.
 Irvine, CA"

I've found communication with an older pet companion to be particularly beneficial to both the pet and the
owner.  Like all of us, aging comes with some physical limitations.  Older pets are usually happy to be able to
clearly communicate to their owners what problems they are experiencing and vice versa.

Once I understand the pet's issues, I am also able to suggest things that can help improve those areas that
need improving, as I did with Nancy and Stanley.

INTRODUCTORY ANIMAL COMMUNICATION WORKSHOP

I wanted to let any of you living in Southern California know that I will be having another Introductory
Animal Communication Workshop in January, 2007.  I realize that is a few months away, but it will
be right after all the holidays, so I want to let you know well in advance so you have adequate time
to plan to attend.

I like having this workshop at the beginning of the year, a time that is perfect for creating how the rest
of the year will be, and including better communication with your pets is an excellent way to begin the
year.

My workshops are lively and fun.  You'll learn the basics of Communication, enough so that you and
your animals will have a deeper bond through stronger communication and understanding.

Here is what an attendee of one of my previous workshops had to say:

I attended one of Charlene's workshops to see if I could speak to and understand my cat in a better way. I often felt they were trying to tell me something, but I just didn't "get it." In Charlene's workshop I learned how animals communicate with us, and how to receive their messages. I learned that everyone can communicate with animals too! I found Charlene and the other class participants helpful and supportive of each other and I really had a good time!

J. Johnson, Studio City, CA

I have always been around animals and was curious about animal communication. After the workshop, I began to see animals in a different way, with more respect for their intelligence and the lessons they are here to teach us.Amazing experience!

L. Whitmore, Lakeside, CA

I'll give you specifics on when and where the workshop will be held.  I hope you plan on attending.  You and your
pet will both be glad you did.

DATE:  January 2007
COST: $95

Light refreshments will be provided.

If you are interested in attending, send an email to charlene@talk-to-animals.com and I will reserve a
place for you.

6. FROM THE BOOKSHELF

Complete Guide to Natural Health For Dogs and Cats

Author: Richard Pitcairn, DVM

I too, get caught up with new trends and theories in companion animal care and sometimes forget about
some of the really great pioneers in this field that have stood the test of time.

Richard Pitcairn, DVM, has been  a proponent of natural health and care for dogs and cats for a number of
years. He firmly believes in using the highest quality ingredients obtainable, whether you are using a high
grade kibble or a homemade diet for your pet.  His book, Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health
For Dogs and Cats is a complete, well-written book with sections on nutrition, special diets, holistic and
alternative therapies, including herbal and homeopathic modalities. His quick reference section covers
medical problems ranging from abcesses to weight problems. My oldest dog began to put on weight and
I have him on a reducing diet from this book.NOTE: before starting any new diet, please have your pet
examined by your vet to rule out any underlying medical problem. He is looking and feeling better already!
Dr. Pitcairn also covers topics including choosing the right pet for your family or lifestyle, the emotional
connections and your pet's health, and a very comprehensive on caring for a sick pet and first aid procedures.

In reviewing this book again, I was reminded of  what a complete, well balanced reference book this is for
both novice and seasoned pet owners. I know I'm moving my copy to a more accessable location for easier
reference.

8.  The Tail End

I hope you enjoyed this month's issue of Talking-To-Animals and are perhaps glad to be living in places
where marauding bands of adolescent monkeys are not.

No matter what our political beliefs or ideologies are, we can all be sympathetic to the plight of the
animals that have been left to fend for themselves in Lebanon. Even in the chaos and upheaval
of the area, there are good samaritans who are trying to save and care for the thousands of pets left
behind. Food and medical supplies are needed as well as temporary shelters. There are no rescue
organizations such as we have in the United States to step in at a time of need. I checked out this
organization and they appear to be legitimate. I know any funds would be greatly appreciated. We
all remember what a difference individual donations and rescue organizations made in the aftermath
of our own Hurricane Katrina, just a year ago this month.  Please visit them at LINK

I enjoy communicating to you and I love the work I do in bringing understanding to both the pet and the
pet owner so that both may experience a higher level of communication and harmony.  If you have a
desire or need to achieve clearer communication and understanding with your pets, please email me at charlene@talk-to-animals.com.

===========================================================================
Mission Statement:

"I feel that my primary role as an animal communicator is to speak the truth for the animals. By speaking their truth I am able to share with their owners their unique perspectives and spiritual philosophies. The special bond that companion animals share with their owners is one that is built on love and trust. Through this special relationship both owners and their animals have an opportunity to experience love, trust and mutual understanding. It is the key to all relationships we develop with our pets. As we become more sensitive to our pets, we learn that we are all One, created by the same Divine spirit. Our ultimate goal is to live in harmony and joy with the animals we love and cherish."
