1. WELCOME DEAR READERS

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the May edition of Talking To Animals! So much has changed in the lives and well-being of
our pets since I last wrote. All of us have been affected, either directly or indirectly by the pet food scare
which is still going on. Each day more foods are being added to the recalled list. I always felt complacent
about the kibble I fed our dogs. It is (or I should say was) a premium kibble that I had recommended to
some of you and came highly rated by Whole Dog Journal. I had done extensive research on their line of foods
(ok, I'll mention the brand. It was Blue Buffalo.).  All was well in my world, right? My heart stopped when
I read that they were on the recalled food list. Upon further research, I learned that this "family owned"
company was in part, owned by Weight Watchers International!!

None of our dogs became ill, thank goodness, even though the only product recalled was their Spa Select
line of cat food. I felt upset of course, and somewhat betrayed. Who can you trust these days regarding
food for our pets? This recall is hitting premium foods as well as lesser quality foods. Corporations don't
"love" our pets the way we do. The bottom line at the corporate level is profit, of course. Not the health and
safety of our family pets.I feel that there is a silver lining to every cloud, even one of the magnitude of the pet
food recalls. I sincerely hope that the FDA and all pet food manufacturers work around the clock until we feel
that we can put or faith and confidence in the products that they sell us. I think it behooves all of us to become
much more aware and informed about the foods we feed our pets who trust us so much. Don't you too, feel
that they deserve this? I sure do.

This month our theme is pet rescue; the animals who are rescued and the people who do this work. Unfortunately
in our society, pets are still seen as disposable items.Shelters and sanctuaries are full of unwanted pets. Some
are indeed strays, but many are cast off by insensitive people. The shelters and most breed rescue groups for both
cats and dogs are up to their ears in unwanted animals. Most pets from puppy mills end up unwanted due to health
or behavioral problems that owners don't want to deal with. I have so much respect for the animal control officers,
shelter workers and breed rescue groups. They do the work that most of us could not do or would not want to do.
Fortunately many times there are  wonderful stories and new homes for unwanted pets...that is what keeps them
doing what they do and the deep love for the animals that they help. This month's feature story is about a Bearded
Collie by the name of Casey. Some of you may remember Casey from last year and this story continues the amazing
life of Casey, the Three Legged Miracle.

With blessings,

Charlene

2.  HAVE FUN WITH YOUR PETS!  A FUN RECIPE

Dear readers, with all the concern about pet food, I thought I would include a recipe for a cake for dogs.
It is called, Let Them Eat Cake! After all, we need to have some fun with our pets, especially where their
health and food is concerned.

This is a recipe from Real Food For Dogs: In a large bowl, blend 3 cups water, two shredded carrots,
one egg, 1/2 tsp vanilla, and two tablespoons honey. Mix in two very riped mashed bananas. In a separate
bowl, combine 4 cups whole wheat flower, one teaspoon each baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg.
Combine the flour and carrot mixtures and blend well. Spray a cupcake pan with non-stick spray.
Fill each cup 3/4 full and bake at 350F for about one hour. Cool before serving. Makes 24 cupcakes so
your pet may invite his friends!

PET FOOD RECALL SURVEY RESULTS

Thanks to all of you who responded to the Pet Food Recall survey that our friends at VetLocator.com
were conducting.  I will be sending you all a copy of the survey results in the next few days, and they
are very interesting indeed.

I heard back from Linda at VetLocator.com that the survey responses received from you differed from
the responses they have received from other pet owners in that pet owners from my list had the least
number of pets who had been affected by the pet food recall.  That makes me very happy to hear!

Enjoy,
Charlene

4.  A STORY FROM MY FILES:
CASEY, A FOUR-LEGGED MIRACLE

Dear Readers,

Casey was rescued from a puppy-mill by a man named Pat. When Pat first rescued Casey he found that
Casey was not socialized; he was afraid of everyone and everything in his life. The story of Pat and Casey
really started when Pat took him in his motorhome to get some groceries. Somehow Casey escaped and
was missing for quite a period of time. (the first part of Casey's story is in the archived newsletters on my
website. Please look at the March 2006 edition.)

I was called in to help find Casey.  I was able to locate him, some distance from home and very lost.  When I
contacted him, he was absolutely terrified and would not allow anyone to get close to him. One of his legs
had been injured and was
now badly infected. When he was finally captured and taken to a veterinarian
his leg was so badly damaged that it needed to be amputated.

During my work with Casey, I told him that he was going to have to open up and trust Pat. Casey had
never been able to trust one person--ever.  After that session, Casey knew that he had to put his trust in
one person if he was going to survive. Fortunately it was Pat. Casey had a lot of phobias and unusual
behaviors that would have caused many people to give up on him. Pat had the combination of love and
patience that Casey desperately needed. Pat was able to break down the barriers and allow Casey to
open up to all the love Pat had for him.

As an owner of Bearded Collies for 23 years, I knew what beguiling charmers they can be. And in time,
Casey was no exception. Word of Casey's amazing story spread through their area and a rock band,
after meeting Pat and Casey, decided to call themselves the Three-Legged Dog Band, adopting Casey
as their official mascot. The once fearful and shy Casey soon learned to love being the center of attention.
Pat reported that he could see Casey's confidence began to grow and began to think of doing animal-assisted
therapy with Casey.  Doing therapy work is demanding for a dog with normal experiences, how would
Casey, with his troubled background, fare working around people with disabilities, including wheelchairs
and walkers?

Casey turned out to be an absolute natural at therapy work. Perhaps he could understand better than most
what it was like to be different and overcome impossible hurdles.

Today Casey is part of a canine literacy program helping children who are so shy or have such an inability to
read well that they won't read to their teachers or read in front of other classmates.  These children however
will usually be very comfortable reading to the therapy dog.

Pat wrote to me recently telling me about Casey's newest accomplishment and I wanted to share with all
of you the latest on Casey and Pat:

"Hi Charlene,

I'm sorry it took so long to get back to you after you asked for Casey's picture, but this new computer of mine is
driving me crazier.  I did finally get some pictures of Casey with kids reading to him, but I can not get them
into the computer because they are prints, and my scanner doesn't work.  If you send me an address I will mail them to you.

Casey has been making so many changes over the last six months that I just scratch my head in wonder.
The woman who ran the therapy dog group and Casey's classes died in Feb, and she decided that I should be
the one to run the group, and she didn't bother to ask me if I would do that, so Casey and I have been VERY busy
for the last three months.  We make all of the daytime visits because so many of the members are at work then, and
we don't want to lose the places we visit.  I schedule the visits, notify the members, deal with the people at the various
places we visit, etc. etc etc.  I finally got the group to have an election of officers to get some of the load off of me,
so things will slow down a little.

Casey seems to live for his visits.  He has always been terrified of kids because they are so loud and boisterous,
but last Saturday at the youth library, a three year old used Casey as a step stool to get up on the couch two times,
and Casey didn't even raise up his head to look.  Last week while making a presentation to a second grade class,
I looked down at Casey, and there were six kids laying across him and petting him, and he was loving it.  He is one
amazing boy.  Just think where he was emotionally two years ago, and where he is now.

You are so used to being around Beardies that this story may just seem ordinary to you, but it is amazing to me, and
I have had lots of dogs in my life.  We had company from Ohio last week, and it included the most spoiled dog I have
ever seen.  She is a ten year old Sheltie, and she has never played with another dog.  Casey was VERY happy when
she came in the house, but she would have nothing to do with him, except to threaten him if he got near her.  He kept
trying to make friends with her for two days, but with no luck, so he ignored her after that. On the third day her "Daddy"
picked up one of Casey's squeaky toys and threw it to her.  Casey watched her play with it a little, then he got out of his
bed, walked over and picked it up, took it back to his bed, and laid down on it.  Then "Daddy" gave her another one of
Casey's toys, and the scene repeated, and Casey was laying on two of his toys.  When he threw the third toy to her she
went up to it, then looked at Casey, and instead of taking it, walked away from it.  Then "Daddy" picked it up and took it to
Casey's bed and dropped it in and said, "Here, I'll save you a trip".  That was last Friday, and I'm still laughing.  He brings
tons of joy into my life, and without your help I wouldn't have him, so THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!  If you ever
want to hear another Casey story, I must have a thousand of them.  I think he is really one of a kind.

The best to you, since you are the best,

Pat"

-and my answer to Pat...

"Hello Pat,

I NEVER get tired of hearing about Casey and how you turned his life around (you really gave him a chance and a new life).
Casey truly shows the resilience of dogs.

I always smile when people tell me about physical problems their pets have and should they have them put down
because they are deaf, blind, or like Casey are missing a limb. I tell them about Casey and the new horizons you
and he have met and how the two of you just keep going and going.

I would love to have a photo and I will do an update for my readers in an upcoming newsletter. Casey has everyone
rooting for him. In today's world, we need more inspiring stories like you and Casey.

Big hugs to both of you,

Charlene

5.  A NEW TAKE ON THE RAINBOW BRIDGE - (caution, tissue altert!)

This is a poem that speaks from the heart of animals who have been rescued by Rescue Workers.  The work
they do reaches wide and far and is appreciated by all.  Enjoy and say a silent thank you for all the rescue
workers do for all the rescued animals in America.

The Bridge

Unlike most days at Rainbow Bridge, this day dawned cold and gray, damp as a swamp and as dismal as could be
imagined. All of the recent arrivals had no idea what to think, as they had never experienced a day like this before. But
the animals who had been waiting for their beloved people knew exactly what was going on and started to gather at the
pathway leading to The Bridge to watch.

It wasn't long before an elderly animal came into view, head hung low and tail dragging. The other animals, the ones who
had been there for awhile, knew what his story was right away, for they had seen this happen far too often. He approached
slowly, obviously in great emotional pain, but with no sign of injury or illness. Unlike all of the other animals waiting at The
Bridge, this animal had not been restored to youth and made healthy and vigorous again. As he walked toward The Bridge,
he watched all of the other animals watching him.  He knew he was out of place here and the sooner he could cross over,
the happier he would be. But, alas, as he approached The Bridge, his way was barred by the appearance of an Angel who
apologized, but told him that he would not be able to pass. Only those animals who were with their people could pass over
Rainbow Bridge. With no place else to turn to, the elderly animal turned towards the fields before The Bridge and saw a group
of other animals like himself, also elderly and infirm. They weren't playing, but rather simply lying on the green grass, forlornly
staring out at the pathway leading to The Bridge. And so, he took his place among them, watching the pathway and waiting.

One of the newest arrivals at The Bridge didn't understand what he had just witnessed and asked one of the animals that had
been there for a while to explain it to him.

"You see, that poor animal was a rescue. He was turned in to rescue just as you see him now, an older animal with his fur
graying and his eyes clouding. He never made it out of rescue and passed on with only the love of his rescuer to comfort him
as he left his earthly existence. Because he had no family to give his love to, he has no one to escort him across The Bridge."

The first animal thought about this for a minute and then asked, "So what will happen now?" As he was about to receive his
answer, the clouds suddenly parted and the gloom lifted. Approaching The Bridge could be seen a single person and among
the older animals, a whole group was suddenly bathed in a golden light and they were all young and healthy again, just as they
were in the prime of life.

"Watch, and see.", said the second animal. A second group of animals from those waiting came to the pathway and bowed low
as the person neared. At each bowed head, the person offered a pat on the head or a scratch behind the ears. The newly restored
animals fell into line and followed him towards The Bridge. They all crossed The Bridge together.

"What happened?"

"That was a rescuer. The animals you saw bowing in respect were those who found new homes because of his work. They will
cross when their new families arrive. Those you saw restored were those who never found homes. When a rescuer arrives,
they are allowed to perform one, final act of rescue. They are allowed to escort those poor animals that they couldn't place on
earth across The Rainbow Bridge."

6.  PET FOOD SURVEY RESULTS

Thanks to all of you who responded to the Pet Food Recall survey that our friends at VetLocator.com
were conducting.  I will be sending you all a copy of the survey results in the next few days, and they
are very interesting indeed.  I heard back from Linda at VetLocator.com that the survey responses they
received from my mailing list had the highest level of pet owners who were already cooking for their
pets at home and had the least number of pets who had been affected by the recall.

7. PET FOOD RECALL NEWS, A STORY AND SOME RESOURCES

Dear Readers,

Although I am certain that many of you are as tired of reading about yet another pet food recall as I am, it
is important that each of us stay informed on what is happening with this recall when news is announced so
we may do what we can to safeguard our pets health.

In this section of my newsletter I've included a heart wrenching story I received from
a breedlist I belong to, and a list of pet food recall resources that you will want to keep handy.

****Note:  Using animal communication services in conjunction with a trip to the veterinarian is an excellent
way to ensure that your vet is 'looking in the right direction'.  Vets, just like your own physician, do best when
they know where to start.  I have many "Stories from my files" of a pets life being saved because the pet "told
me where it hurt" and that information was relayed to the vet who then took the necessary steps to save the
pet.  For those of you who have used my services in the past, you know that one of the first things I check is
whether your pet has had a check up.  Animal communication is no substitution for a veterinary visit.  However,
it is a good tool to use in conjunction with a vet visit.  I feel so strongly about this that I have a special consultation
just for pet's health check up.  It is a shorter version to my usual consultation session............................$55.00.
You may email me at charlene@talk-to-animals.com or call me if you'd like to schedule a health check session.

-----

This heart-wrenching excerpt is from a letter was sent to my by a breed list I belong to.
I've included it because it is a story
that has been repeated tens of thousands of times across the US, and it could happen to any of us unless
we insist that the FDA begin monitoring

Dear Cavalier Friends, Breeders, Family and Acquaintances,

Last week our dogs began getting sick. We first thought that they had
somehow contracted a stomach virus from our family, because we had been
sick with a stomach virus earlier in the week. I took two of my dogs
to my local vet and she said to withhold food for 12-24 hours until their
vomiting stopped. We did this and then slowly started adding in cooked
chicken breast and white rice to their diet. At first it appeared as though
they were all improving. Then by late Friday night my oldest girl, Katy,
began to go down hill quickly. I took her back to my vet early
Saturday morning and my vet said that she appeared to be in Acute Renal
Failure…by 6:00 p.m. Saturday, we very sadly lost our precious Katy
girl.

By late Saturday night, Abby our 10 month old little girl from Germany began
showing signs of decline. Sunday morning, we loaded up 3 of our dogs
and started on our way to Texas A& M University’s Small Animal Emergency
Clinic. We took Abby, our Champion Timmy and Tia.

All but Abby, still had a good appetite at this point, the only signs we were
seeing was large amounts of urine output. We made the 3-hour trip and once
arriving, we quickly learned that all three dogs were in Acute Renal Failure.

The doctors at A&M were almost certain that it was from some sort of toxic
exposure and being that we recently moved to a new house about 7 weeks
ago, we were exploring all possibilities, such as our water, our soil, etc. We
came back home very late Sunday night. Monday morning, we quickly began
calling environmental specialists…both municipal and private agencies.

Monday morning, we learned that Abby had taken a rapid decline at the
hospital overnight and that her chances were very slim at best. The
doctors requested that we let her go and have them perform an autopsy in
order to perhaps figure this out and save the other dogs. By Monday afternoon,
we loaded up again with our remaining dogs and took them to A&M University
Hospital.

Another of our dogs, Peaches, is in severe acute renal failure with her
numbers being off the chart. We will see this morning if she has made any
improvement overnight. Holly, our 6 month old girl, has one number off the
chart, but another number close to normal range. There is good hope for her.
And Zoe Girl, is fairing the best, mostly because she has always been a
very particular eater, never eating real dog food unless she had to,
more often she was fed cottage cheese and turkey breast from the refrigerator.

With several college professors and doctors, fortunately for us, verifiably some
of the best in the nation, working on our case, around 9:00 p.m. last
night (4-16-07), the doctors met with us and confirmed that it was the Natural
Balance Venison and Brown Rice Dog food that is the cause. The autopsy on Abby
confirmed the crystal formation that is seen in all the renal failure
cases concerning the recent dog food recalls. The college staff shared with
us that notice had just been provided by the FDA that Dick Van Patten’s Natural
Balance Venison and Brown Rice was added to the list late yesterday
evening.

When we asked, with the list of "bad" foods so long, what is safe to
feed? The doctors response was paused …you might say reluctant…to say
anything that might later be discovered to be misleading...or wrong. The
doctors said their best answer is "We just don’t know for sure what
food is safe…what food will be added to the list next."....................

For those of you who may not have heard, Blue Buffalo, Harmony Farms, Natural Balance,
Diamond Pet Foods and SmartPak Canine have all recently recalled some of their foods
(all of these were added on or after April 25th).

8.  FROM THE BOOKSHELF

Things are pretty "heavy" in the world of pets with the widespread pet food recall and very worried owners.
For this month's FROM THE BOOKSHELF I would like to feature this charming children's book, The
Patched Heart, A Gift Of Friendship And Caring by Helen Stewart.

This book is special to me because it features the story of two Bearded Collies that are not only endearing,
but brave, loyal, fun-loving and caring. This is their story of going to the hospital to get well; it is also a
tale of friendship and its power to heal. The gentle illustrations evoke dreams of childhood and a time of
trust and protection. This book is certain to touch your heart and brighten your spirit, no matter how old you are.

Day 983 of my captivity...

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects.

They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are
fed hash or some sort of inedible dry nuggets. Although I make my
contempt for the horrid rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless
must eat something in order to keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In yet
another attempt to disgust them, I vomit on the carpet. This evening
I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet.
I'd hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly
demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made
condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am.

Bastards!!

There was some sort of assembly of my captors and many of their
accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the
duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell
the feast. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of
"allergies." I must learn what this means, and how to use it to
my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my
tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try
this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs. I am now convinced
that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog
receives special privileges. He is often released and seems to be
more than willing to return. He is quite obviously retarded. The
bird has got to be an informant.  I regularly observe him communicate
with the guards. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors
have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe..

for now.

10.
THE TAIL END

Thank you for being part of my life each month. I hope that thinking about the relationship you share
with your own pet and animals in general brightens each day.  May you have a wonderful month and
if you're thinking of a new pet, please consider rescuing a dog or cat.  The old adage "A Rescue pet Is
Eternally grateful" is certainly true and I've experienced many grateful rescued pets during my work with
animals.

Blessings,

Charlene

Mission Statement:

"I feel that my primary role as an animal communicator is to speak the truth for the animals.
By speaking their truth I am able to share with their owners their unique perspectives and spiritual
philosophies. The special bond that companion animals share with their owners is one that is built
on love and trust. Through this special relationship both owners and their animals have an opportunity
to experience love, trust and mutual understanding. It is the key to all relationships we develop with
our pets. As we become more sensitive to our pets, we learn that we are all One, created by the
same Divine spirit. Our ultimate goal is to live in harmony and joy with the animals we love and cherish."
